How to Care for Your Tree Bed Garden

Tree beds are beautiful, beneficial green spaces, but they require consistent maintenance to stay healthy and flourishing. Here are the key steps to keep your tree bed garden in great shape year-round:

Watering Your Tree Bed

During the growing season (spring to fall), water your tree bed at least every two weeks when temperatures are above 40°F. In drought conditions, water more frequently to prevent plant stress. After a few years, as your plants become established and show resilience, you can gradually reduce watering based on their needs.

Litter and Weed Removal

Keeping your tree bed clean not only makes it look better but also helps your plants. Regularly pick up litter with gloves or a trash picker to avoid contamination, and remove weeds before they take over your garden. Be sure to pull weeds from the base to remove the roots entirely, preventing regrowth. Compost the weeds if possible, but dispose of non-compostable litter and dog waste in the trash.

Maintain Tree Guards and Other Protective Structures

A well-maintained tree bed communicates that someone is taking care of the space and encourages others to do the same. Therefore, you should Fix damaged tree guards, replace torn webbing, and update signs to keep them clear and easy to read.

Build a Community of Caretakers

Caring for a tree bed is a rewarding activity, but it’s even better when shared. Engage friends and neighbors to help with watering, weeding, and cleaning. A collective effort can make the upkeep easier and foster a sense of community pride.
