How to Prepare Your Tree Bed For Planting a Native Plant Garden

Follow this simple guide to get your tree bed ready for planting.

Step 1: Remove Litter

Start by cleaning up your tree bed. Use gloves or a trash picker to safely collect and dispose of trash.

Step 2: Remove Unwanted Plants

Next, identify and remove weeds. If you're unsure about a plant, we generally recommend removing it unless you’re confident it’s worth keeping. Pull weeds from the base to ensure the roots are fully removed, otherwise, they’ll grow back. Use a weeding tool for tougher plants. Once you are done collecting weeds, put them in the compost. Remember, dog poop belongs in the trash, not the compost!

Step 3: Aerate the Soil

Now it’s time to loosen the soil, which may be compacted. Use a gardening fork and gently scratch the surface. Be careful to avoid damaging the tree’s roots. Aerating helps air and water circulate, benefiting the tree and creating a healthy base for your plants.

Happy gardening!
