How to Plant Your Tree Bed Native Plant Garden

Planting your tree bed is an exciting step in creating a vibrant garden for pollinators and wildlife. Follow these tips to ensure a healthy start for your plants:

Follow Spacing Guidelines

If you’ve created a planting plan with Tree Bed City, use the suggested spacing on your plan to position your plants. If you’re working without a plan, refer to species-specific spacing recommendations, which you can usually find on plant tags or online. Proper spacing ensures each plant has room to grow and thrive.

Avoid Planting Too Close to the Tree Trunk or Tree Bed Edge

Keep plants at least one foot away from the tree trunk to protect its roots. Similarly, stay at least six inches away from the tree bed's edges to ensure that plants have space to grow.

Be Kind to Tree Roots

Tree roots can make digging tricky. If you can’t dig a deep enough hole for a plant, it’s okay to gently trim the bottom of the plant's roots to fit. This will encourage the roots to spread out and establish themselves in the surrounding soil.

Water Thoroughly After Planting

Give your newly planted garden a good soak to help plants settle in. A helpful rule of thumb is to water three times: water, let it soak into the soil, and repeat twice more. This ensures the roots have access to plenty of moisture as they establish themselves.

Keep your plants safe!

With thoughtful planting and care, your tree bed garden will soon flourish, providing beauty and habitat for years to come!
